2. If a license selection screen is displayed, select the available free-use option and continue. Current free releases do not require a license key.
3. Grant any macOS permissions requested by VMware Fusion.
4. Wait for the one-time initialization to finish. VMware Fusion is then available in the Applications folder.
7. Install Windows 11
Windows is not included with VMware Fusion. A valid Windows license is required for activation, although installation can be completed without entering a product key. Activation can be completed later from Settings > System > Activation.
The Windows version must match the Mac processor architecture:
• Apple silicon Mac: Windows 11 Arm64
• Intel-based Mac: Windows 11 x64
An x64 Windows image cannot be used on an Apple silicon Mac, and an Arm64 image cannot be used on an Intel-based Mac.
Check the Mac processor
1. Open the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of macOS.
2. Select About This Mac.
3. Read the Chip or Processor field. An Apple M-series chip indicates Apple silicon; an Intel entry indicates an Intel-based Mac.
Apple silicon Mac
VMware Fusion includes a built-in Windows 11 download utility for Apple silicon Macs. This method automatically retrieves the correct Arm64 version.
1. Open VMware Fusion.
2. Select File > New. If the welcome screen is displayed, select Create New Virtual Machine.
3. Select Get Windows from Microsoft, then select Continue.
4. Select Windows 11 Pro from the edition list, then select Download Windows.
5. Wait for the Windows image to download, then select Continue.
6. Select UEFI when the firmware type is requested.
7. Configure virtual machine encryption. Select Auto Generate Password or enter a custom password, then record the password in a secure location. Encryption is required for the virtual TPM used by Windows 11.
8. Select Create a new virtual disk, review the virtual machine summary, and select Finish.
9. Select a storage location for the virtual machine and select Save.
10. If the message Press any key to boot from CD or DVD is displayed, click inside the virtual machine window and press any key immediately.
Intel-based Mac
A Windows 11 x64 ISO image is required on Intel-based Macs.
Download the official Windows 11 x64 ISO from Microsoft:
https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11
After the ISO download is complete:
1. Open VMware Fusion and select File > New.
2. Select Install from disc or image, then select Continue.
3. Select Use another disc or disc image.
4. Select the downloaded Windows 11 ISO file, then select Open and Continue.
5. Confirm that Windows 11 64-bit is detected as the guest operating system.
6. If Windows Easy Install is displayed, enter the requested Windows account name and password. A product key may be left blank when activation will be completed later.
7. When encryption is requested, enable it and record the encryption password in a secure location. Fusion uses the encrypted virtual machine to provide the virtual TPM required by Windows 11.
8. Review the virtual machine summary, select Finish, choose a storage location, and select Save.
9. If the message Press any key to boot from CD or DVD is displayed, click inside the virtual machine window and press any key immediately.
Complete the Windows installation
The following steps apply after the Windows installer starts:
1. Select the installation language, time format, and keyboard layout, then select Next.
2. Select Install now.
3. Enter a valid Windows product key, or select I don’t have a product key to activate Windows later.
4. Select the Windows edition covered by the available license. When Windows 11 Pro was downloaded through VMware Fusion, select Windows 11 Pro.
5. Accept the Microsoft license terms.
6. Select Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).
7. Select Drive 0 Unallocated Space, then select Next. Windows copies the required files and restarts automatically.
8. Complete the initial Windows setup by selecting the region, keyboard layout, network, Microsoft account, sign-in PIN, and privacy options.
9. Wait until the Windows 11 desktop is displayed.
Install VMware Tools
VMware Tools installs the drivers and integration components required for improved graphics, input, networking, and virtual machine performance. Windows Easy Install may install VMware Tools automatically.
If VMware Tools is not installed automatically:
1. Keep the Windows virtual machine running and signed in with an administrator account.
2. From the macOS menu bar, select Virtual Machine > Install VMware Tools. If an earlier version is present, select Update VMware Tools.
3. If the installer does not open automatically, open File Explorer in Windows, open the VMware Tools DVD drive, and run setup.exe.
4. Select the Typical installation, complete the setup, and restart Windows when requested.
Prepare Windows for TWM
1. Open Settings > Windows Update and install all available updates. Restart Windows when requested, then check for updates again.
2. Keep the Windows Documents folder inside the local Windows profile. Avoid redirecting Documents to OneDrive or to a mirrored macOS folder, because TWM stores application data and custom projects in Documents.
3. If OneDrive backup is enabled for Documents, open OneDrive Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup and stop backup for Documents before installing TWM.
8. Install TWM
The TWM installer must be downloaded and executed inside the Windows virtual machine, not from macOS.
1. Start the Windows virtual machine and open Microsoft Edge or another browser inside Windows.
2. Open the TWM Releases page:
3. Select Download now for the latest available release.
4. After the download is complete, open the installer from the Windows Downloads folder.
5. If Windows User Account Control requests permission, select Yes.
6. Follow the installer instructions until the installation is complete.
7. Open TWM from the Windows Start menu or the desktop shortcut.
8. Enter the TWM account credentials and complete the sign-in process.
9. If an application update is offered, allow the update to complete before configuring connections or importing custom scripts.
TWM is ready for configuration once the main application window is
