Bitstamp was founded in Slovenia in 2011 by Nejc Kodrič and Damijan Merlak.

Bitstamp is one of the oldest, most reputable centralized cryptocurrency exchange (CEX) in the industry. Bitstamp serves more than 4 million customers in over 100 countries. It was initially established as a European alternative to the other available exchange, MT. Gox. In 2013 Bitstamp relocated its operations to the UK in 2013 and later to Luxemburg in 2016, where it obtained the license to operate in all EU member states. In 2018, Bitstamp sold 80% of its shares to NXMH, a Brussels-based investment firm managing over €2 billion in assets. NXMH specializes in long-term private equity investments in top European companies with strong global growth potential. In 2024, Robinhood announced its acquisition of Bitstamp for 200 million dollars.

Trading fees

Bitstamp uses a maker-taker fee model, where fees get lower as your 30-day trading volume increases. Makers (those who add liquidity) generally pay less than takers. FX/stablecoin pairs are discounted in the fee calculation, counting for only 20% of volume. Standard trading fees start at 0.30% for makers and 0.40% for takers, and go down to 0.00%–0.03% for very high volumes. Restricted Countries

Bitstamp restricts access to its services in certain countries and regions in accordance with international sanctions and regulatory requirements. These include Russia, North Korea, Iran, Syria, Cuba, China, Sudan, and specific parts of Ukraine—namely Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. Residents from these areas are not permitted to use the platform, in line with compliance obligations set by the U.S., UK, EU, and Singapore [5].
